No two car wash tunnels do exactly the same job. A new express tunnel, a short retrofit, and a flex-service wash can have very different space, mounting, and sequencing requirements. Mitters and top brushes both clean the hood, windshield, & roof, but they create that contact in different ways.
Thus, the best choice is not simply a question of which piece of equipment cleans better, but instead how the equipment needs to fit, move, & work with the rest of the tunnel.
Two Ways to Clean Top Surfaces
How a Mitter Cleans
The AVW Mitter Curtain uses hanging cloth curtains suspended from a moving basket. AVW’s basket follows a circular motion that moves the curtain material across the vehicle surface in a pattern that simulates hand washing. The system uses a bearingless basket design & telescopic height adjustment.
Because the cleaning media hangs from above, the mitter creates broad cloth contact across the hood, windshield, & roof. The basket, number of curtain rods, and frame configuration can then be customized to the amount of tunnel space available.
How a Top Brush Cleans
The AVW Top Brush uses a rotating foam brush that follows the hood, windshield, & roofline. Pneumatic controls manage air assist / brush retraction, while hydraulic and electric drive options allow the equipment to work within different backroom control setups.
The standard AVW Top Brush can be supported from one side (floor mounted on either the driver or passenger side.) From there, operators can evaluate the dual-brush or dual-arm configurations based on the necessities of the individual operation.

Space Matters, but Variation Matters More
Tunnel footprint is one of the clearest reasons to compare a mitter and a top brush, but neither has only one footprint.
Mitter Configurations
- Full Mitter: Uses a 7-foot basket with six curtain rods for a full curtain section.
- Mini Mitter: Uses a 7-foot basket with four curtain rods, creating a shallower mitter section when longitudinal space is limited.
- Retractable Mitter: Available in full & mini arrangements, with a retractable basket assembly that can move clear as part of the wash sequence.
- Double Mitter: Uses two baskets to create two curtain sections (when layout allows for additional longitudinal space.)
- Combination Units: A mitter can be incorporated with other friction equipment, including two AVW configurations:
Z-Wrap/Mitter Combo & Z-Wrap/Mitter/Contour Combo, to consolidate multiple cleaning functions into the available tunnel space.
Top Brush Configurations
- Standard Top Brush: One rotating brush supported from one side and floor mounted on either the driver or passenger side.
- Dual Top Brush: Two standard top brushes with opposing rotation. AVW’s dual configuration works in the same amount of space as the single configuration.
- Dual-Arm Top Brush: One brush supported from both ends. AVW offers both rack-mounted and free-standing dual-arm arrangements.
- TopFlex: AVW’s most advanced top brush configuration, featuring a pivoting dual-arm design, air assist, & the ability to reverse brush direction as the brush contours the vehicle.
Therefore, the comparison should begin with the tunnel layout itself rather than a generalized preference. A top brush may fit one location’s model exceedingly well, while a mini mitter or a mitter combo may be superior for another.
How Does the Wash Model Change the Decision?
Wash model matters because it changes what is required of the equipment within the larger process:
- New-build tunnels can position the top-wash equipment as part of the complete sequence; with mounting, service access, & surrounding friction equipment planned together.
- Short tunnels & retrofits may benefit most from mini, dual, retractable, or combination configurations that work within existing space / mounting limitations.
- High-volume operations should consider repeatable vehicle contact, equipment clearance, inspection access, & how the top-wash stage works at the selected conveyor speed.
The Maintenance Factor
Both systems are designed for routine service, but inspection points will differ. The mitter requires attention to the curtain material & basket components, whereas the top brush requires attention to the rotating brush, bearings, air system, & supporting arm components.
For mitters, AVW recommends daily checks around nozzles, hydraulic fittings, & crossrods; monthly inspection of the basket support discs; and periodic inspection of the curtain material. (Retractable configurations also add air cylinders that should be checked for leaks and/or smooth movement.)
For top brushes, AVW recommends monthly bearing lubrication & inspection of the shock absorbers and air cylinders. Brush diameter should be checked as the foam wears, with the inspection schedule adjusted to the site’s actual use.
Therefore, the more strategic question is not “Which one has less maintenance?” But moreso, “Which maintenance points fit our team’s service routine and overall layout?”
Can a Tunnel Use Both?
In short, yes. The mitter and the top brush should not be treated as competing answers in every tunnel. When the available space & wash package support multiple top-cleaning solutions, the circular motion of a mitter combined with the rotating contact of a top brush can actually serve complementary roles.
The exact sequence should be established during tunnel planning. Things such as vehicle spacing, conveyor speed, chemical application, sequencing, surrounding friction equipment, and maintenance access all influence where each piece belongs.
Questions to Ask Before Choosing:
- How much tunnel space is available for the top-wash stage?
- Are there existing foundations, arches, or mounting restrictions?
- Would a combination frame free space for another cleaning function?
- Does the site need a retractable configuration?
- Will the site support hydraulic or electric drive?
- How will employees access the components for inspection?
- What vehicle profiles must the equipment accommodate?
- Would one top-wash stage be enough, or does the wash package call for both types of solutions?
Configuration Makes All the Difference
Overall, the mitter and top brush both play an essential role in cleaning the hood, windshield, & roof. The key difference is how their available configurations fit the tunnel.
For some operators, the answer will be a full or mini mitter. For others, it will be a standard, dual, dual-arm, or TopFlex brush. In some tunnels, using both will make the most sense. The right decision begins with the wash model, equipment sequence, & the way in which the operator plans to maintain it.
